Welcome to Trezor — Device setup & first steps
Follow these secure, official steps to initialize your device, install firmware & Trezor Suite, and safely back up your recovery seed.

Quick start — what you'll do
Estimated time: 5–15 minutes. Make sure you are in a private place and have a pen & paper ready for your recovery seed.
- Unbox your Trezor device and check packaging integrity.
- Download Trezor Suite or use the official web start tool.
- Install firmware if prompted and create a PIN.
- Write down your recovery seed on the included card — never store it digitally.
Step-by-step setup
-
Inspect the device
Check tamper-evident seal and packaging. If packaging looks opened or tampered with, do not proceed — contact support.
-
Connect & open Trezor Suite
Use the cable included. Open the official Trezor Suite app or start.trezor.io when prompted by the device. Only use official software from trezor.io.
-
Install firmware
If your device requires a firmware update, allow the update from the official app. Do not install firmware from third-party sources.
-
Create a PIN
Choose a PIN you can remember but others won't guess. The PIN is entered on the device screen; the host computer only receives encrypted confirmations.
-
Write down your recovery seed
Write each word carefully on the supplied recovery card. Never photograph, copy to a file, or enter the seed on any computer or phone.
-
Verify and finish
Confirm one or more words when prompted to verify you recorded the seed. After verification, your device is ready to use.
Security reminder: Trezor will never ask you to share your recovery seed or private keys with support, online forms, or strangers. If asked, stop and contact official support.
FAQ & troubleshooting
Q: My device shows an error — what should I do?
Restart the device, reconnect the cable, and ensure you are using the official Trezor Suite. If the error persists, contact support and provide the exact error message.
Q: Can I back up my recovery seed digitally?
No. Digitally storing the seed (photo, cloud, text file) exposes it to theft. Always store the seed offline on the supplied card or a secure metal backup.
Q: Is it safe to buy a used Trezor?
Buying used devices is risky. If you receive a used device, perform a full firmware reinstall and act as if the device could be compromised; prefer buying new from authorized sellers.
Q: How can I verify the firmware is genuine?
Trezor Suite verifies firmware signatures for you. Follow on-screen prompts during firmware installation to ensure authenticity.
